The word supplied a taxonomic label for a distinct group of people whose professional identity or public function were no longer described by the traditional categories of the Russian social structure into which they were born, nor did they fit the categories of the state's own intelligentsia, a group indispensable to an industrial society, which, much as it may differ from the old cultured class in breadth of knowl edge, spirit, and purpose, is nevertheless formally comparable to it. The Soviet official usage of the term "intelligentsia" takes cognizance classic questions of modern Russian life, yet about which it is al ways possible to say something new, since it is as rich as that life itself. The term intelligentsia was introduced into the Russian language in the 1860's by a minor novelist named Boborykin, and became cur rent almost immediately. This fact is of more than anecdotal signifi the intelligentsia has shaped Russian intellectual culture with its distinct themes, literary props, psychological traits, and favored political agendas. Russian intellectual culture shares with its Western counterpart the belief in directed social change and cultural critique as a tool for social reconstruction.
